A reflection on the theme “Revolutionary Peacemaking” for our gathering in October
By Sam Durgin, Bruderhof
Christian communities, as demonstration plots for the Kingdom of God, have a special task to show the “peace that is not of this world” which Jesus proclaims. This is a revolutionary peace, that cannot exist with out the justice of the future Kingdom, which is also a “Justice that is not of this world.” In community, we don’t settle for mere equality, but seek Christ-like love: we become servants of one another. Through this love, we can realize the unity that Jesus prays for. (John 17:20-21)
In Christian community, we demonstrate a peace that is the fruit of “forgiving each other seventy times seven times,” “washing each other’s feet,” “loving our enemies,” and “turning the other cheek.”
The work of living in true Christian community is itself the mission we offer the world. It stands as an open invitation to a new world order. In our daily living we proclaim as the Good Book says in Psalm 85, “Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; justice and peace will kiss each other.” It’s a work in which we ourselves will always fall short, but together we turn to God daily for strength and inspiration.
